Audit assessment documentation of discussions and consent for general and regional anaesthesia.
Data was collected for all patients having a general or regional (spinal or epidural) anaesthetic during one morning in 6 hospitals across South Yorkshire.
Data showed that risks and consent are documented extremely poorly. The focus was on common but less serious complications, but those rare risks that would be considered material risks to most patients were either not discussed, or that discussion was not documented.
The audit is being presented in each participating trust over the coming months.
